What is PCR?
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a nucleic acid-based technique that enables rapid and sensitive detection of specific micro-organisms.[ii] Widely used in research, immediate access is still somewhat of a novelty for veterinarians, as they are used to a laborious process of sending culture samples to outside laboratories. This often takes days or weeks for the culture to grow and the specific pathogen, such as a virus or a bacterium, to be identified.
